Sheff Wed Confronts Serious Challenges, States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's persistent issues are seen as a "serious issue" and the football regulator is seeking powers to investigate clubs in similar circumstances, its new chair the official has declared.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four fan organizations representing the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club missing wage payments on five separate occasions, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a significant problem for EFL and a major challenge for the sport," Kogan told.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.

"We are seeking authority... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases submitted for our review if they warrant scrutiny and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be prepared to relinquish control at the stadium, but he has not been able to secure a deal with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in summer, blocking the team from conducting any recruitment activities for the subsequent signing windows, although those limitations were removed in August.

Regulator's Perspective

Kogan said: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a community organization that has represented their community in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Inquired if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the oversight body would choose to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an specific team, an specific proprietor, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the proprietor's dealing with," the chairman stated.

"In actuality, when you look back over the history of football, over the recent generations there have been certain proprietors, a small minority, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the way which they've been managing their organizations and finally refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

Kogan met with delegates from multiple organizations to lay out the remit of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished necessary will vanish rapidly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we need to continue the progress.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been channeled for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on potential dangers and naturally, of the next two or three years."

Elite Division Worries

Top flight officials resisted the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the elite league.

"Being fully aware of the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of England. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a significant confidence."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "comprehensive investigation" by the public appointments commissioner after he disclosed making donations to the political party in 2020.

The official provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any sort of politics."
