Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
